WHY CONDENSATION & DAMP
ARE A COMMON PROBLEM IN UK HOMES

Condensation Damp is the most common type of damp and is thought to affect almost 1 in 5 homes in the UK.
Untreated, condensation can lead to the growth of black mould on walls and ceilings which, aside from looking unsightly, can cause or make existing health problems worse including:

Respiratory Challenges

Spores from black mould are an allergen and can cause major health problems for asthmatics.

Unlike other types of damp – penetrating and rising damp – which are the result of issues with the building itself, Condensation Damp is caused by our day to day living.

Why Condensation is Becoming a Bigger Problem

Condensation is caused when warm, humid air contacts cold surfaces such as exterior walls and windows. The moisture that builds up in the air from our day-to-day activities such as cooking, bathing, and even breathing is released from the air when it cools and forms droplets on colder surfaces. Over time, this condensation can soak into the surface of the wall and form damp patches which are an ideal environment for mould to grow.

Some of the measures that we take to make our homes more energy efficient seal the home and reduce natural airflow and ventilation. This includes the use of double glazing, draught excluders, and insulation in walls and lofts. Preventing warm, damp air from leaving the house means that humidity builds up to higher levels and worsens condensation.

The solution – proper ventilation

Good ventilation is the best cure for condensation. Allowing air to circulate around the home prevents humidity building up to high levels and helps avoid air becoming stale and encountering colder walls for long periods.

During the summer months, improving ventilation is easy – you just open a window – however this is not always practical. During cold weather or if you live close to a road, leaving windows open all the time is not an option.

Modern ventilation systems, from simple extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms that expels moist air from cooking and bathing through to whole house Positive Input Ventilation systems improve air circulation and reduce condensation throughout your home.

Testimonials

“I am pleased to have clean ‘fresh air’ in a rental garden flat in a 1730s Georgian building. There is a noticeable reduction in condensation issues associated with bathing/cooking which should reduce redecoration/maintenance costs.”
